As the year comes to an end for drifters, D1WA looked back to the beginnings and invited the founding President, Patrick Coetzer, to the final event of the year held at Jacks Hill. In true Christmas spirit D1WA handed over the keys to the club car to Patrick for the day as a thank-you for all the hard work and effort he put in over the years. Despite not having drifted in roughly 5 years it only took one warmup lap before he was on form and shredding the tyres, much to the delight of the many officials that scored passenger laps with him.

 

The drivers were smoking up the track all day with 25 drivers entered in the morning session and 20 drivers in the arvo. Needless to say, Zac from Mobile Tyre Tech was busy keeping them all super stoked with fresh rubber and of all the tyres he dealt with, no one kept him as busy as Chris Day that tore up 28 and took a record number of passengers out in his street driven 370z.

 

Being the last event, the focus was more on fun than competition although there was a pair of 18×10.5 wheels thanks to Showtime Accessories up for grabs for best Xmas themed car and/or driver. Carla and Ashlee decorated the club car without holding back and it was easily the best but the award was for an entered driver which left Jake Ober, Ken Worroll and Austin Edwards vying for the prize. Between the only 3 drivers that agree dressing up isn’t only for the Xmas turkey it was decided that the win and wheels went to Austin Edwards with both his Xmas themed shirt on as well as his Christmas red BMW flaunting a tree strapped to the roof.

 

Rodney Raffa was forgiven for not having any decorations on his BMW after a beastly effort to change his engine out twice and convert to turbo in just 4 DAYS!! Raffa gave it a red hot crack that produced only a small fire as the turbo charger was melting his plastic rocker covers, which he changed twice but without a 3rd spare had to call it a day putting in only a few, but certainly epic, runs.

There was nothing left on the track this weekend, not even the pieces of the Turn 1 barrier, after another successful event by D1WA. Matsuri #14 went off without a hitch and even with a substantial amount of 85 drivers signing up for the weekend nothing could measure up to the size of The Phantom truck that Outback Trucker, Sludge bought along. Except maybe the awesomeness of his mini Phantom truck that was definitely a crowd pleaser! Although the track itself opened at 9am the competition was already under way with drivers doing last minute prep on their cars and areas trying to take out the award for best Halloween theme. It was great for the crowd to see so many participate but made it a hard decision for the judges with the amount of effort some drivers took. After heavy deliberation the favourite and win was taken by Sarah Holland with a very close second going to Jess De Bellis. As the weather heated up so did the track with over 40 Pro Passengers taken out and many happy faces on both the passengers and the assisting drivers. Nothing as hot as the drift games though that started off with Drift Khana which saw Terry Ingham in his Mazda RX-7 victorious! The Drift Limbo win went to none other than the man, the myth, El Presidente, Jordy Hamer! In his Nissan S14 minus his 3rd gear that he broke earlier on Main Track but with his son in the passenger seat they were still happy to slap the roof & send it into 1st place. It was a mammoth effort from the passengers in the Monster cup challenge with plenty of water and a few tears of laughter spilt before the win was clawed by Jake Ober in his Mazda MX-5. That wasn’t the only title Jake went home with though claiming the glory and prize of Crowd Pleaser too. Speaking of popular things although we all love a good jam donut not even they could compare to the father-son duo in Tandem Donuts that was undoubtedly won by Jamie & Ken Worrolls’ synchronised skills. Jack Carwardine in his R34 Skyline managed to win Drift Carnage after remodeling his rear end. Scott Brown brought the clouds in with his Nissan turbo V8 R33 earning him the Smoke King award but only just as Richard Lazard was a close second in his 2JZ 180SX. Matsuri wouldn’t be a Matsuri without acknowledging the Most Improved which was snagged by Taylor Morris having entered his first drift competition with hopefully many more on his agenda! Massive shoutout to Trident Motorsport for the prizes of Nankang tyres that went to Crowd Pleaser and Smoke King. Also to Micro Glide for the oils , Luxe Performance for the massive amount of prizes , Ellenbrook Bunnings for the gift cards , August36 for the shirts. special mention to DOL TEC for the trophies!

The final standings for the championship had Josh Watkins taking out 3rd place, Ethan Faithful skidding into 2nd place leaving Damien McBride to slide sideways into 1st and be named 2021 D1WA Drift Champion. Congratulations!!

Well the cops weren’t the only ones handing out points this long weekend with D1WAs’ own judges Richard Lazare, Brent Peters and Kurt Holland handing out points in Round 3 at Wanneroo Raceway that saw the 2021 D1WA Drift Championship come to an end.
There was plenty of hard aggressive driving and lots of much loved door to door battling. A special mention to Andrew Cahill and Ethan Faithfuls battle for the best of that action. Not to mention the tyre kisses between Nathan Greenberg and Michael Joosten that had the crowd in a delight similar to when ya mate pulls out the slip ‘n’ slide on a hot summer day.
A massive shout out to the Officials, Committee, Judges and Sponsors for all your time and efforts putting together a remarkable event and of course volunteering. The vibe of volunteering and helping was strong throughout the whole day with some side action fundraising by Penny Laubscher who showed up, dressed up and raising money for the Driftability event.
There was no hesitation from the boys to jump in and help when Josh from Team No Superstar broke a rocker arm and I’m sure if Ashlee Mueller had any idea how to fix it she would have helped too! After some intense rounds and a few divided decisions by the judges, Ethan Faithful took home the bragging rights on the day finishing in 1st place, with Nick Owen in 2nd and Ben Lathwell in 3rd place.

Wanneroo Raceway was the place to be Sunday 15th with D1WA Drift holding their Round Two Championship Event thanks to their latest sponsor Madman Motors. It was so great to see all the drifters, some even coming from Esperance, their supporters and families that made it down to watch the latest battles take place. The young ones were happily entertained in between battle rounds playing on the playground, while the young at heart took photos with the girls from Monster Energy and gladly sampled their free merchandise. It was another fun filled day with plenty of door on door action and some battles too close that even the judges Richard Lazare, Brent Peters, Kurt Holland couldn’t split the points. D1WA used a new, fair points system so that even new drivers like cory gilpin making his competition debut and winning street class had an equal shot at the win but at the end of the day the awards were taken out by Josh Watkins in 3rd, Damien McBride in 2nd and Ethan Faithful in 1st place. D1WA holds around 15 events each year for new and old drifters alike and is a volunteer run organisation.

D1WA introduced a Brand New event, at Perth Motorplex called King of the Plex. the majority of the event was passenger friendly practice then in the arvo we moved to a fun top16 Battle format, the weather was fantastic, free drinks were flowing thanks to Monster Energy, and the event had a really cool vibe thanks to Carlas Playlist on our new Speakers
